Why an old DVD may not play

Work out whether the disc, player or connection needs attention before assuming your DVD is damaged.

Distinguish a video DVD from a data disc

A DVD-Video disc normally contains a VIDEO_TS structure. A data disc can contain MP4 or other files instead. A failed read alone does not prove that the structure is absent.

Check playback and hardware separately

Try software intended for DVD playback and check the drive connection. If the drive stops responding, cancel the operation rather than repeatedly starting reads.

Respect protection and preserve originals

BROOVIS detects and reports observed copy protection; it does not remove it. Ownership of a disc does not by itself establish a right to copy it. Please follow local law and any applicable permissions.
